Facts and Figures

Are your numbers actual figures or projections?

All box office grosses, both domestic and foreign, are actuals. Negative costs are verified when possible, estimated otherwise. P&A is estimated. Most current domestic Home video revenues are actuals based on first shipments while historical domestic home video revenues are both estimates and actuals. Foreign Home Video revenues and ancillary revenues are projected.

How far back do your film cost/revenue titles go?

Our archive of 8,000 titles plus includes virtually every U.S. theatrical release from 1985-present.

Does P&A cover foreign territories?

No, our estimated P&A budget covers the U.S. theatrical release only.

Are manufacturing and marketing costs factored into the home video revenue data?

No. Our home video revenue data reflects only the number of units that shipped to retailers for both rental and sell-through use, and the resulting revenue.

How come your video numbers are different than what I find on other sites? The media tends to report “point-of-sale” numbers, which include both rental and sell-through numbers at the retail level. These numbers are larger and more dramatic as they reflect retail pricing which is at least double wholesale pricing. Baseline focuses on wholesale numbers – both units and pricing – which do not contemplate the retail mark-up. Why? Retailers realize 100% of the markup, while producer and investor participation is linked to wholesale revenue.

Do home video numbers include sell-through and rental figures?
No. Our home video revenue data reflects only the number of units that shipped to retailers for both rental and sell-through use, and the resulting revenue.

Do you do projections on Studio Films?

Yes. Baseline’s analysts can provide revenue projections - box office, home video and ancillary performance - for most studio films.

Industry Terms

Box Office Rentals
This term refers to the fee that a distributor charges to an exhibitor for the rental of a film print. The negotiated fee is typically a pre-set sliding percentage of box office take, minus exhibitor nut. If Box Office Gross can be described as “total take”, Box Office Rentals can be best described as “distributor take.”

DVD Revenues
Specific to Baseline’s FRCE reports, DVD Revenues represent the wholesale revenue derived from the shipment of X units to retailers, rental and sell-through alike.

P&A
“Prints & Advertising” is the combined cost of manufacturing X prints of a film and the advertising budget for that film’s domestic theatrical release.

Max Screens
Max Screens is the maximum number of screens a film played on during any given weekend of its run. This may or may not be the opening weekend as some distributors pursue a platform release strategy, increasing the number of locations as a film generates buzz.

Negative Cost
A film's negative cost is the entire production budget of the film not including any P&A costs. It is the actual cost of producing and shooting a film. The term comes from the costs up to the production of the final film negative.
